Bronze pearl is a golden-bronze pearlescent pigment powder made of thin natural mica flakes colored with synthetic colorants. Stirred into a clear binder, it gives a warm metallic shimmer for highlights, ornaments, faux-gilding effects and decorative painting in acrylic, watercolor and oil, and it can add a bronze sheen to transparent colors.

How to use

Stir the powder gently into a clear binder with a palette knife: acrylic medium (gloss gives the strongest shine), gum arabic for watercolor, or a clear oil painting medium or varnish. Do not grind or mull it hard: grinding breaks the flat platelets and the luster turns dull. The effect is strongest in thin, even layers on a smooth surface; matte media and opaque pigments reduce it, so combine it only with transparent colors. In oil, keep it to the upper layers. Stir the paint before use, because mica flakes settle.

About bronze pearl

Pearlescent pigments imitate the luster of pearls and shells. Each particle is a thin, flat, transparent flake; in a paint film the flakes lie parallel, and light reflected from many layers gives a soft, deep shine that changes with the viewing angle. Mica is ideal for this because it splits into extremely thin sheets; it is also insoluble in water, acids and bases.

Safety

Breathing mica dust over long periods can damage the lungs: open and pour the fine powder gently to avoid dust clouds. Handle dry pigment with care: avoid breathing the dust and contact with eyes. Wear a dust mask (FFP2/N95) and gloves when working with the powder, work in a well-ventilated area and wipe up spills with a damp cloth. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working; wash your hands afterwards. Keep away from children and pets. For artistic and technical use only — not for cosmetics, food or tattoos.

FAQ

Can I grind Bronze pearl with a muller?

No. Grinding breaks the flat mica platelets that create the luster. Stir the powder into the binder with a palette knife or brush instead.

Which binder shows the shine best?

A clear, glossy one: gloss acrylic medium, gum arabic or a clear varnish. Matte media and opaque pigments dull the effect.

Is Bronze pearl a natural pigment?

Partly. The mica flakes are a natural mineral, but the bronze color comes from synthetic colorants added in manufacture.
