Cobalt Pink is a synthetic inorganic pigment powder made of basic cobalt carbonate. It gives a soft, semi-transparent pink and, according to our supplier, is very lightfast. Use it in acrylic, egg tempera, watercolor and gouache, and keep it away from acids, because carbonates dissolve in them.
Key facts
- Color: soft pink, semi-transparent
- Pigment type: Synthetic inorganic pigment (cobalt carbonate)
- Composition: basic cobalt carbonate, 2CoCO3·3Co(OH)2·H2O
- Origin: synthetic
- Opacity: semi-transparent
- Lightfastness: 8 of 8 on the Blue Wool Scale (supplier data)
- Chemical resistance: dissolves in acids (it is a carbonate)
- Suitable for: acrylic, egg tempera, watercolor, gouache
- Not recommended for: acidic binders, grounds or additives
- Packaging: 50 g jar · 1 kg bag
How to use
Mix the powder with acrylic medium, egg yolk or gum arabic using a palette knife or muller, and grind gently until smooth. Being semi-transparent, it works best in glazes and delicate tints over a white ground. Do not combine it with acidic media or additives such as vinegar, which attack carbonates. Because of its cobalt content, mull it wet rather than dry to avoid dust, and store the jar tightly closed.
About cobalt pink
Cobalt(II) carbonate is naturally pink; in nature it occurs as spherocobaltite, a rare red to pink mineral. Our pigment is made synthetically as basic cobalt carbonate, which our supplier prefers to the anhydrous carbonate for its properties. In pottery, cobalt carbonate is a classic raw material for blue glazes, famously those of Delftware.
Safety
Contains cobalt carbonate compounds: harmful if swallowed and may cause allergic skin or respiratory reactions; cobalt carbonate is classified in the EU as a substance that may cause cancer by inhalation and may damage fertility. Not for use by children or during pregnancy. Handle dry pigment with care: avoid breathing the dust and contact with eyes. Wear a dust mask (FFP2/N95) and gloves when working with the powder, work in a well-ventilated area and wipe up spills with a damp cloth. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working; wash your hands afterwards. Keep away from children and pets. For artistic and technical use only — not for cosmetics, food or tattoos.
FAQ
Is Cobalt Pink a natural mineral pigment?
No. It is synthetic basic cobalt carbonate. The natural cobalt carbonate mineral, spherocobaltite, is rare.
Is Cobalt Pink lightfast?
Yes. Our supplier rates it 8 of 8 on the Blue Wool Scale. Its weak point is acid, not light: as a carbonate it dissolves in acids.
