Malachite crystal is a natural green pigment powder ground from crystalline malachite, the copper carbonate mineral, with a coarser grain that gives a deeper, more saturated green than our standard Malachite. Coarse malachite shows its richest color in egg tempera, watercolor and gouache, and it can also be used in oil and acrylic.

Key facts

  • Color: deep, saturated green; finer grinding makes it paler
  • Pigment type: Natural mineral pigment
  • Colour Index: PG39
  • Composition: basic copper carbonate, Cu2CO3(OH)2
  • Also known as: mountain green
  • Opacity: semi-transparent
  • Lightfastness: 8 of 8 on the Blue Wool Scale (supplier data)
  • Chemical resistance: alkali 5/5, lime 5/5 (supplier data, 5 = best); dissolves in acids (it is a carbonate)
  • Suitable for: oil, acrylic, egg tempera, watercolor, gouache
  • Packaging: 50 g jar · 1 kg bag

How to use

Its depth of color comes from the grain, so treat it as a coarse pigment: wet the powder and fold it into the binder with a palette knife rather than grinding it fine. Use egg yolk for tempera, gum arabic for watercolor and gouache, acrylic medium, or linseed oil. Stir the paint often, as coarse particles settle. Keep it away from acids, heat and sulfur-containing pigments, which darken copper greens.

About malachite

Malachite has been used both as an ornamental stone and as a paint pigment since before 3000 BCE, and painters used it until about 1800. Coarsely ground malachite gives the deepest green, while fine particles give a lighter, more transparent tone. In nature malachite often occurs together with blue azurite.

Safety

Contains copper compounds: harmful if swallowed. Handle dry pigment with care: avoid breathing the dust and contact with eyes. Wear a dust mask (FFP2/N95) and gloves when working with the powder, work in a well-ventilated area and wipe up spills with a damp cloth. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working; wash your hands afterwards. Keep away from children and pets. For artistic and technical use only — not for cosmetics, food or tattoos.

FAQ

How is Malachite crystal different from our Malachite?

Both are natural malachite. Malachite crystal is a crystalline grade with a coarser grain and a deeper, more saturated green; our standard Malachite is a lighter green.

Which binder shows coarse malachite best?

Egg tempera and gum arabic (watercolor, gouache) show its clearest, deepest green. It also works in oil, but the green looks darker and can dull as the oil yellows.

Is malachite lightfast?

Yes. Our supplier rates malachite 8 of 8 on the Blue Wool Scale; it is harmed by acids, heat and sulfur fumes rather than by light.
