Phlogopite golden (pearl) is natural phlogopite, a golden-brown magnesium mica, split into fine flakes that catch the light like tiny mirrors. Its golden color and pearly luster are the mineral's own. Stirred into clear binders or scattered onto wet paint, it adds a natural golden glint to acrylic and watercolor work, varnishes and decorative surfaces.

Key facts

  • Color: golden brown with a pearly to metallic glint
  • Pigment type: Pearlescent mica pigment (natural phlogopite flakes)
  • Colour Index: PW20 (C.I. 77019), mica
  • Composition: phlogopite, a potassium magnesium aluminosilicate mica, KMg3AlSi3O10(F,OH)2
  • Opacity: semi-transparent (thin flakes are transparent to translucent)
  • Lightfastness: excellent (mica, PW20, is rated I, the top category)
  • Suitable for: acrylic, watercolor
  • Not recommended for: oil paint layers (coarse natural mica can weaken an oil film)

How to use

The flakes measure about 0.1–1 mm, so they give sparkle rather than a smooth sheen. Stir them into a clear, glossy binder with a palette knife, such as acrylic medium or gel or gum arabic, or sprinkle them onto wet paint, size or varnish and seal them with a clear coat. Do not grind them: broken flakes lose their glint. A fairly thick binder layer holds the larger flakes best, and a pinch added to other colors gives a subtle golden shimmer.

About phlogopite

Phlogopite is a mica, the magnesium end member of the biotite series. Its name comes from the Greek for "fire-like", after its often reddish tint. It forms in metamorphosed dolomitic marbles and in ultramafic rocks such as kimberlite; in Russia it is found, for example, around Slyudyanka near Lake Baikal. It splits into thin, flexible, elastic sheets with a pearly to submetallic luster.

Safety

Breathing mica dust over long periods can damage the lungs: open and pour the fine powder gently to avoid dust clouds. Handle dry pigment with care: avoid breathing the dust and contact with eyes. Wear a dust mask (FFP2/N95) and gloves when working with the powder, work in a well-ventilated area and wipe up spills with a damp cloth. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working; wash your hands afterwards. Keep away from children and pets. For artistic and technical use only — not for cosmetics, food or tattoos.

FAQ

How is phlogopite different from your pearl pigments?

Our pearl pigments are mica flakes with an added coloring layer. Phlogopite is a natural mica whose golden color and shine are the mineral's own, and its coarse flakes (0.1–1 mm) sparkle rather than give a smooth sheen.

What is the difference between golden and grey-green phlogopite?

Only the natural color of the mineral: the golden grade is warm golden brown, the grey-green grade a cool, muted gray-green. Both are natural phlogopite flakes of about 0.1–1 mm.
