Silver pearl is a silver-white pearlescent pigment powder made of thin, transparent mica flakes. Stirred into a clear binder it adds a cool, silvery luster for highlights, water, moonlight and decorative work in acrylic, watercolor and oil, and glazed over other colors it gives them a pearly sheen without hiding them.

Key facts

  • Color: silver-white with a pearly luster
  • Pigment type: Pearlescent mica pigment
  • Composition: mica (PW20) flakes with a thin reflective coating; silver-white pearl pigments are normally made by coating mica with titanium dioxide
  • Also known as: pearlescent pigment, pearl luster pigment, mica powder
  • Opacity: semi-transparent
  • Suitable for: oil, acrylic, watercolor
  • Packaging: 20 g jar · 1 kg bag

How to use

Stir the powder gently into a clear binder with a palette knife: gloss acrylic medium, gum arabic for watercolor, or a clear oil painting medium or varnish. Do not grind it, because grinding breaks the platelets and the luster disappears. Silver pearl shows most over dark or deep-colored grounds; over white it reads as a faint sheen. Keep layers thin, use it in the upper layers of oil paintings, and avoid matte media and opaque colors, which dull the effect. Stir the paint before use, as the flakes settle.

About silver pearl

Silver pearl is the classic pearlescent effect: it adds luster rather than color. Thin mica flakes lying parallel in the paint film reflect light from many layers, much like the nacre of a pearl or shell. In pigments of this type the flakes carry an extremely thin layer of titanium dioxide, which strengthens the reflection; the mica itself is lightfast and insoluble in water, acids and bases.

Safety

Breathing mica dust over long periods can damage the lungs: open and pour the fine powder gently to avoid dust clouds. Handle dry pigment with care: avoid breathing the dust and contact with eyes. Wear a dust mask (FFP2/N95) and gloves when working with the powder, work in a well-ventilated area and wipe up spills with a damp cloth. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working; wash your hands afterwards. Keep away from children and pets. For artistic and technical use only — not for cosmetics, food or tattoos.

FAQ

Why does Silver pearl look weak on white paper?

Because its effect is reflected light: a white ground reflects too, so the sheen is faint. Over dark or saturated colors the silvery luster stands out clearly.

Can I grind Silver pearl finer?

No. Grinding breaks the flat mica platelets that create the luster. Stir it into the binder instead.

Can I use Silver pearl in cosmetics?

No. It is sold for artistic and technical use only, not as a cosmetic-grade colorant.
